Rosenberg-Willenken
Joining Fleisher in 2012
Bridge Sparring by Ana Roth

wrote in a Bridgewinners
article in July 13, 2011: For almost two full years,
the regular roster of the FLEISHER team has
read like a “Who’s Who” of bridge: Levin, Weinstein, Martel,
Stansby and Kamil. Led by captain Marty Fleisher, the team’s
perennial success has led to the expectation that the road
to any championship goes through them. Beginning with the
2012 Spingold, Michael Rosenberg and Chris Willenken will be
joining the FLEISHER team. Along with
Fleisher/Kamil and Martel/Stansby, they will seek to
continue the FLEISHER legacy for years to
come.

One player asked: "Beginning
with the 2012 Spingold"; at world level this means after the
2012 World Mind Sports Games,
beginning
with 2013 Bermuda Bowl. Right?
And Martin answered:
Exactly right. We are planning to play with Levin-Weinstein in
the 2012 World Mind Sports Games and Rosenberg-Willenken in the
2013 Bermuda Bowl. There is, of course, the technicality of
winning the trials in those years, but perhaps we'll get to go
simply by acclimation.

where it all began to once again pick on Michael Rosenberg,
this time
partnering Chris Willenken. Though the partnership is relatively
new, they have already managed several promising results.
This includes
a run to the semifinals of last year’s Rosenblum, where their
team lost by 4 IMPs to the NICKELL squad.
Expect to see them
in the winner’s circle frequently in the future.
So when I saw them
playing in BBO, with their sparring-opps: Gary Cohler & Warren
Spector I decided to stop by and kib for a while.
And the very
first board I watch is this one:

was Junior´s bid description...LOL)

This hand was played
in 16 different BBO-tables, almost all of them played 3NT, and only one
arrived to the same contract but the end of it,
was 1 down. Double dummy, the hand is cold, via a double heart finesse,
so lets see how Williken played the hand.
He
won the lead with his
A,
and played another two high diamonds. He continued playing a club to the
A
and a
little heart to the
J,
when this won, he played a spade to the A
and ruffed a spade.
Afterwards he played a diamond, North played a heart, dummy
played a spade and South played the
Q.
The position was:
Williken continued with a diamond...and South loose by a
squezze-knockout...13 tricks for not playing a heart honour.
This
was the postmortem dialog:
scotty:
I've been playing the heart jack for 40 years, and it's never held, well done
warrens: the J in dummy was like a dagger in my
junior: ty-- complicated to play
