JUST BRIDGE...
DOUBLE
YOUR PLEASURE

Bridge was once a much simpler game. For example, apart from the
notorious Lightner Slam Double (to direct a
certain lead) there were only two meanings
for a double - takeout or penalty. In
today's game the double has undergone a
metamorphosis; if you enjoy reading about
the game, you might come across doubles
labelled negative, responsive, competitive,
action, optional, support, maximal overcall,
game-try, fourth-suit, and yet others. It is
certainly possible to play a good game of
bridge without adopting any of them, but it
can be useful to see how a few of the more
popular doubles operate.
Let's try a few situations comparing "traditional" and "modern" methods,
with South to interpret the meaning of
double.
